In the not-so-distant future, the boundaries of reality will blur, and a new dimension of human experience will unfold—the 3D virtual reality of the Metaverse. Imagine stepping into a world where the laws of physics bend at your will, where creativity knows no limits, and where human connections thrive across vast digital landscapes.
In the computer industry, the Metaverse is a concept that many tech giants believe will be the future of the digital era; a digitally generated world where humans interact and experience life-like environments within the horizons of a virtual space.
After Facebook changed its corporate identity to 'Meta, back in October of 2021, to indicate an upcoming universe formulated entirely as a virtual reality, technology leaders such as Google, Microsoft, Nvidia and Qualcomm have invested billions into this concept, along with Facebook's initial investment of $10 billion with more to be funded. The Metaverse Economy is loosely expected to hit around $5 trillion by 2030.
Yet, the question is, do we already have a metaverse that exists in the present?
Today, the term "metaverse" is utilized by companies to describe a wide array of enhanced online environments. These encompass diverse experiences, ranging from engaging online video games like Fortnite, to emerging virtual workplaces such as Microsoft's Mesh or Meta's Horizon Workrooms, as well as virtual dressing rooms and even virtual operating rooms.
Unlike a unified, shared virtual space, the present-day metaverse is evolving into a "multiverse" - a collection of metaverses with some level of interoperability, as companies compete and vie for dominance in this evolving landscape.
Such a metaverse is far off in the future, and it's uncertain how the metaverse as imagined by Meta would look like:
Either it could be like the digital experiences we have today or consumers could spend hours trying to navigate a digital space, but it's sure that it will be very much like the Internet, only in 3D. It's sure that the avatars or virtual identities we use today for online experiences like shopping, financial commitments will exist then, just as if it were real life.
However, fundamental technical barriers still exist and many tech startups like Microsoft or Epic Games are trying to come with their own virtual realities. It could be said that we live in a pre- metaverse world where access to VR headsets and AR goggles give us a glimpse into our digital future.
In conclusion, the Metaverse holds great promise for the future of human interaction and experience. Although it is still in its nascent stage, substantial investments and ongoing technological developments indicate a trajectory towards a more immersive and interconnected digital realm. However, the exact form and functionality of the metaverse as envisaged by tech giants are yet to be fully realized.
