How to lead is a very good question that many people like to ask. As someone who has led and managed various successful events in the past, my first comment on leadership would be that: Leadership is an art, and there is no right or wrong way to lead. Some kinds of leaders might be able to effectively lead one group of people while another type of leader might be able to gel well with another group of people. The best kind of leader, however, can lead in multiple ways and can change their leadership style with regards to whom their leading. The way you choose to lead should always be determined by 3 factors:

Who your team members are?

Your team members are the people whom you work with who will all be comfortable/ would prefer different leadership styles. You need to identify who your team members are and their preferred leadership styles before figuring out the best way to lead them!

The work that needs to be done?

The difference in work would also affect various factors of your leadership style. The work being done would affect how formal, assertive, diplomatic and strict on deadlines you would be. For example, if you had to handle a marketing job with your team, you would ideally be a lot more formal compared to if you were handling the logistics for an event.

The hierarchy above you?

Who are you responsible to and how exactly do they expect you to work. How much control do they have over your work and how much influence do they have over your team would impact your decisions as well. Ensure that those above you on the work that you are leading are satisfied with your work and with you, otherwise, life is going to be made hell for you as a leader and for your team.

Regardless of the 3 factors listed above, you need to ensure that your team is satisfied and well-taken care off. Ensure that they are not overworked and ensure that your failures, insecurities and stress are not projected onto them. Passing your burdens onto your team is the perfect way to ensure that the work will never be completed or that the work done will be of poor quality. Effective communication is of the utmost importance when working together in a team, it is the glue that binds and team and you have to ensure that you communicate with your team properly. Leadership is about to show persons, you take out some of the work and show that it can be done. You take a part of the work that needs to be done and do an exemplary job, motivating your team to do their job to the best of their ability as well (Ensure that you encourage them and praise their work as well). Finally, you will want to be firm and confident on where you stand as a leader and ensure that while you do leave room for negotiation, what you say should not be ignored and should be acted upon, command respect and appreciation. Closing off, leadership is all about persuasion and character, if you get these right, you will make a FANTASTIC leader!
